The tsunami that swept across the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004 took the lives of more than 175,000 people, left millions displaced and did untold billions of dollars of damage across South Asia. In Sri Lanka, an island nation the size of West Virginia, over 30 thousand people died and over a million were left homeless.

Relief agencies, charitable organizations, governments and individuals worldwide have responded quickly with unprecedented generosity to this disaster. But devastation of this magnitude, combined with the delicate social and economic conditions in Sri Lanka, means that some will be overlooked or left behind. Rebuilding their lives and livelihoods will be an ongoing endeavor for years to come.

Many of the hardest hit are among the poorest of the poor in Sri Lanka. Many people live on less than a dollar a day and they have lost the very things necessary to make a living. In some costal villages in Sri Lanka a fishing boat and gear are used communally by four or more families. Much of this equipment was lost or damaged by the tsunami. If we can replace even one boat, we can help four families begin to support themselves again.

We have founded this organization to focus directly on repairing and/or replacing those things that enable a person to sustain themselves. They need shelter, transportation (many still use a standard bicycle which sometimes transports three), and the resources necessary to rebuild.

TASK is working with the guidance of local organizations and individuals in Sri Lanka to fund projects that will affect people most directly.

Thank You!

To everyone who participated in making our fundraiser a success!

On April 2nd, 2006 TASK held a dinner and silent auction at The Bridge Restaurant in Anchorage, Alaska. We raised $9520.00

After hosting this event Sandy and Craig Walters travelled to Sri Lanka (at their own expense) to discuss the project with the local NGO, Sewalanka.

Please check back to this site for a detailed account of their experience and first hand view of the ongoing relief and reconstruction in Sri Lanka.
